Overview of Sandstone Agents

Sandstone Agents

How Agents work in Sandstone

This video explains how to leverage agents for reviewing and drafting agreements

Introduction

In the Agents tab, you will find all of the agents, or playbooks, that you have created in your workspace. There are essentially two types of playbooks:

  • Outbound: Templates and rules for drafting and negotiating with a counterparty.
  • Inbound: Rules and positions for reviewing third-party documents.

Sandstone refers to playbooks as agents because they are not static documents. They are AI-driven systems that can execute work based on the rules and positions you define.

Outbound Playbooks

Example: NDA Template

Outbound playbooks include templates such as a mutual NDA that you might send to a counterparty.

  • Editing: Click on a playbook tile to view and edit its positions.
  • Positions: Each position can be edited (via the pencil icon), rearranged between columns, or deleted.
  • Fallback Provision Library: A dynamic library that Sandstone builds over time. It captures frequently used fallback provisions from historical documents (e.g., a fallback definition of confidential information from a past NDA). Sandstone can then suggest this language in future negotiations.

Template Tab

  • Shows which template is linked to the agent.
  • Clicking View opens the exact template with placeholders.
  • Placeholders: Identified by the agent as requiring input. They form part of a validation step so the agent ensures enough information is gathered to populate the template.
  • Unlike traditional form-based tools, Sandstone collects this information through natural language conversation, reducing errors and missing data.

Escalation Flow

  • Defines the rules for how much autonomy the agent has in executing workflows.
  • Approval settings can be set to conditional, never auto-approve, etc.

Admin Details

  • Customize details about the playbook.
  • Helps the team understand the purpose and scope of the agent.

Inbound Playbooks

Inbound playbooks look similar to outbound ones but may not always have a gold-standard template.

  • Example: For a SaaS MSA, you may not have a standard form but you can still define red flags to monitor.
  • These red flags can be specified in the inbound agent for automated detection.

Using Playbooks in Requests

When someone in the business submits a request (e.g., procurement of SaaS software like Salesforce), it can trigger an inbound playbook.

  • Cards: Each legal request appears as a card.
  • Communication View: The left side shows correspondence (e.g., the incoming email requesting review).
  • Auto-Draft Response: Sandstone AI generates a draft response.
  • Playbook Application: The relevant playbook is automatically applied (e.g., SaaS MSA review playbook).

Key Findings

  • The system highlights deviations from the defined playbook positions.
  • Clicking See Details allows a deep dive into each flagged position.
  • Example: Four non-compliant red flags may be surfaced for legal review.

Document Preparation

  • Agents can execute a redline version of the document.
  • Accessible in the Prepared Document section.
  • Documents can be downloaded as Microsoft Word files or viewed in Sandstone’s built-in Word editor.
  • Full functionality includes track changes and commentary explaining replacements, insertions, or deletions.

Augmented Review with AI

  • Built-in AI assistant can:
    • Answer questions about the document.
    • Provide context.
    • Make live edits.

Business Context

A unique feature of Sandstone is the Business Context tab.

  • Goes beyond legal analysis by integrating with other systems.
  • Can surface commercial details relevant to negotiations.
  • Example: Salesforce integration may reveal previously signed contracts at discounted rates, giving negotiators additional leverage.

Summary

Sandstone Agents (playbooks) are living, AI-powered systems designed to:

  • Automate drafting and review processes.
  • Ensure compliance with internal rules.
  • Provide dynamic fallback suggestions.
  • Enable redlining and live AI-powered editing.
  • Integrate business context into legal workflows.

This holistic approach allows legal teams to work more efficiently, reduce manual intervention, and negotiate from a position of knowledge.
